Each year in August, old time folk and country music lovers flock to Lansing, North Carolina to celebrate bluegrass and old time Americana through music and song writing for the Ola Belle Reed Festival. Lansing’s famous former resident, Ola Belle Reed Campbell was born in 1916 and lived until 2002. She was an American folk singer and clawhammer banjo player that made her mark on various genres of music.

Reed’s music frequently was about her life in Appalachia and the traditions of mountain people. Her best-known songs went on to be recorded by country artists such as Marty Stuart, Del McCoury and Tim O’Brien. One of her most famous songs was “High on a Mountain”.

The festival highlights the best of the bluegrass traditional music that is played in our area and pays homage to singers and young songwriters that are up and coming. Musicians join together during this time to learn from each other and enjoy old fashioned jam sessions. The festival is held every year at Lansing Creeper Trail Park north of West Jefferson on N.C. 194.

The Ola Belle Reed Music Festival benefits the Greater Lansing Area Development organization. Groups such as Lost Province Arts Center for Cultural Arts, which seeks to renovate the Old Lansing Historic School are just one of several in the area that pay homage to Ola Belle Reed’s contributions to the community while seeking to continue Appalachian arts and traditions in the community.
