Historical Barn Quilt Tour in Ashe County

History of Barn Quilts

If you have spent time traveling through the High Country, you may have noticed the beautifully painted squares located on barns and homes around the area. Much like your grandmother stitching together bits of fabric to tell a story, these Barn quilts are “stitched” together with vibrant colors helping to bring a little add flair to the landscape.

The origin of the quilt squares actually began in Ohio in 2001. Donna Sue groves wanted to pay homage to her mother, Maxine, who was a noted quilter.  The concept quickly spread from state-to-state.  It now includes the following states: Colorado, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, West Virginia and Wisconsin. It has even spread to as far as British Columbia.

In 2005 the tradition was brought to North Carolina.  Ashe county became on of the three counties in Western North Carolina to take part in creating our states own quilt square. The project was originally funded by Blue Ridge National Heritage Grant through Handmade in America.  After 2001, the Ashe County Arts Council brought together artists in the community to help mount, design and paint the squares. Some of the people involved include students from Ashe County High School, local artist, students from Appalachian State and community members.
