Ashe County is one of the northernmost counties along the North Carolina and Virginia border in the Appalachian Mountains. It borders the NC counties of Alleghany, Watauga and Wilkes.  It is a small, rural mountain county that who’s lands have largely remained preserved and pristine. Most of the county is located atop a rolling plateau that ranges from 2,500 feet to 3,000 feet above sea level. It’s county seat is Jefferson, and the town of West Jefferson is one of the centers for commerce and culture.

The New River, which is largely believed to be one of the oldest rivers in the world by most geographers and scientists, snakes it’s way through the county and fills the county with some 34 creeks and streams. The river is peculiar in that it is one of only a few major rivers in the southeastern United States to flow primarily north instead of south, east or west. It was designated as an ‘American Heritage River’ in the 90’s and has been kept clean, clear and well preserved for fishing, canoeing and kayaking. There are several great listings of real estate in Ashe County found along the banks of the New River, or with New River views. Several of the properties within the Ashe County MLS also feature creeks or mountain brooks on the property. These were created by this river! If you are interested in fishing cabins for sale, or log cabins for sale along the New River, we can help you! We’d love to show you properties for sale on the New River in Ashe County, and just over the border of Watauga and Alleghany.
