Todd North Carolina is a remarkably unique mountain community that sits right along the lines where Watauga County and Ashe County meet. The South Fork of the New River flows through this area creating numerous fishing, wading, canoeing, kayaking and tubing locations. This lush river valley community was established in the late 18th and early 19th century and was once called Elk Cross Roads. It has a very interesting history. During the last part of the 19th century the town outgrew neighboring Boone due to it’s timber, mica and copper mining industries. It was during this time, in 1894, that the area’s Post Office was officially named in honor of Civil War veteran, Joseph Warren Todd, who was credited with restoring order to the area after the war. In 1910,the town got a major economic boost when the Virginia-Carolina Railway decided to extend its tracks to the town from West Jefferson. The train was known as the Virginia Creeper and its path can still be followed along Railroad Grade Road. The town was once a major hub for the area as you can tell from its vast history, but due to the Great Depression, and a major flood that occurred shortly after, the railway decided to stop running, and a lot of the community’s economic resources dried up in the decades after that. Today, Todd North Carolina contains some of the most sought after North Carolina Mountain Land for sale due to its proximity to the New River. Many land lots and homes are found on the river’s banks. If you desire to live on the river, and enjoy the scenic mountain river views, Todd is the absolute best place for you to begin your search.
Today, Todd is a wonderful second home to many and it is a tourism destination for those looking to getaway and enjoy the sights and sounds of nature. The area is home to numerous locations on the National Register of Historic Places including The Elkland School Gym, R.T. Greer and Company Root and Herb Warehouse, and Todd Historic District. An old train engine, a caboose and several cars are visible from various parts of the area.
