New River NC in Ashe County

The New River in Ashe County is one of the biggest assets to our mountain lifestyle. This massive river is part of the Ohio River watershed and flows through three states before meeting up with the Gauley River in West Virginia to form the Kanawha River. It is one of the oldest rivers in the world, pre-dating the formation of the Appalachian Mountain range, which is widely believed to be over 480 million years old. It is one of our nation’s American Heritage Rivers, and a 26 mile portion of the river in North Carolina was named the ‘New River State Scenic River’ as part of North Carolina’s Natural and Scenic Rivers System. The same segment in North Carolina (nearby to the Ashe County Real Estate listings that we sell) was added to the National Wild and Scenic Rivers System as well.
