Crumpler NC in Ashe County is a pretty remarkable place, and even if we are biased, it does come with it’s own unique history that is worth detailing. Crumpler is home to the legendary, Healing Springs, that folklore says healed many ill and ailing patients, travelers and locals since they were discovered in July of 1883. At that time, the springs were called Thompson’s Bromine and Arsenic Springs. There was even a hotel that led people to flock to Crumpler, settled along the springs, where guests would stay at while using the springs as a form of treatment. The springs curative abilities were heralded seemingly by all who visited them and either bathed or drank (or both) the waters. Today, the springs remain, but the hotel burned decades ago. Today, visitors can stay in cabins near the springs instead.
Another spring was also found close to the same time as the Healing Springs. In 1890, Martin Shatley discovered the Shatley Springs, also in Crumpler and thus, Shatley Springs Inn began. These springs also had remarkable curative qualities and visitors flocked to stay at the inn and be healed by the waters from the springs. Shatley Springs flow out of Little Phoenix Mountain. Today, Shatley Springs is more widely known for operating a country, family style restaurant that serves breakfast, lunch and dinner, although, there are cabins available for guests to stay in near the springs.
