Ashe County is filled with exceptional places to visit and great restaurants. The historic downtown is filled with many storefronts and some neat things such as the Ashe County Cheese Factory. There are also a few breweries and wineries in the area.
Downtown West Jefferson is where you can visit our breweries. When in town you can visit the Boondocks Brewery which includes a tap room and restaurant. The tap room features 30 + beers on tap, and the Brew Haus, where all the brewing happens, is open for tours and special events. In February 2015, they completed Phase 1 of the brewery expansion by installing new 3bbl (90+ gallons) brewing tanks and larger fermenters. On August 1, 2016 they completed Phase 2 of our Brewery expansion by installing a new 5bbl (150 gallons) brew system. Also, in downtown West Jefferson, is another brewing company, New River Brewing. Their goal is to provide fresh, local beer to Ashe County and the surrounding counties. New River Brewing’s taproom is housed in the former Carolina Country Wines & Craft Beer location downtown.
For Ashe County wines, you can visit Thistle Meadow Winery, the county’s only winery. This winery has existed for 20 years or so and creates about 1700 cases of wine per year. It’s located right off of the Blue Ridge Parkway and has been ranked highly (3rd) among North Carolina wineries by the South Eastern Winery Review.
Ashe County is adjacent to the Yadkin Valley Wine Country, a popular wine region in North Carolina filled with vineyards and wineries that spans 7 different counties, including Wilkes, which is a county that borders Ashe County. In Traphill, you’ll find Roaring River Vineyards, a French-inspired vineyard, restaurant and event venue, located along the majestic Roaring River.
